Personally I see no problem in this as not everyone has the time, skill or tools to make their own costumes.

However, a lot of Chinese sellers tend to make garbage (My Misa Misa costume came from eBay, it was crap and I should have made it myself). A lot of people tend to buy from Chinese sellers because it's more inexpensive than commissioning an American seamstress to make the costume. Where you may spend $100 on a Chinese cosplay, you'd pay double that if buying from an American.

I have seen some decent costumes from Chinese eBay sellers though, and there's no harm in wearing something you didn't make so long as you don't enter any cosplay competitions and pretend that you made it yourself.

A lot of people tend to be elitists about the fact they have amazing costumes where they made everything from the dress to the shoes, and then rag on people for buying some aspects of their costumes. But as I heard one person respond to that sarcastically, "I know, some cosplayers don't even farm their own cotton.". Lol.

I've resolved that I will have certain cosplays comissioned and certain ones made. Sometimes it's actually cheaper to commission them, if the costume has lots of embellishments or something like that. I do however, have to make my Freya and Sakizou costumes because I can't imagine how one would go about shipping what would esentially be a 3.5' tall 4' wide (guesstimate) cage frame.

Anyways, onward to watch more Vampire Knight! I also would like to Cosplay Yuki Cross because it would take very little effort in regards to altering my appearance (I wouldn't even need a wig, just some fake bangs!)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; So far I've decided on Jigglypuff and Koffing, not too sure about the other ones though.

I also think I am going to make/alter a swimsuit so I can have a Tentacool Gijinka cosplay for all the pool parties :D.

Photos later!

Convention Survival Guide!

It's Christmas and I'm a bored Jew and I don't know what to do with myself... Hence, this 'Con Survival Guide!!'.

I've been to a few cons and each time you figure out something important. I take planning cons a little too seriously, but I guess it's a hobby and it's better that I do this rather than drink myself into a coma.

Anyways, this is a guide intended to help a con n00b, if anyone actually reads this blog! (Don't think they do, but I'll pretend.)

Many Months Before the Con:
-Figure out your hotel situation (Staying in a hotel is always your best bet, it's more convenient and way more fun besides) and CONFIRM it at least 2 months before the con. That way you won't be staying in a room the size of a closet with 9 other people and sleeping in a shower stall. (NEVER. AGAIN.)
-Pre-Reg as soon as you can! You'll save money this way.
-And start saving or at least get an idea of what you'll need to spend. Costumes aside I bring about $300 cash with me and hotel room shares tend to cost between $100-$200 on average (This is with about 5 other roommates). So yeah, expensive hobby.
-Get active on the con's forum. Most, if not all, cons have a forum on their website. You'll know more people at the con and get a better idea of what to do.

1 Month Before the Convention:

-Make sure you have your costumes at least 1 month before the con unless you are making them yourself! Even then, I'd just make sure to have them all done because that way you know they're done and no worries the night before you leave about not having a costume/having an incomplete costume.
-Confirm your hotel room again! If there are any mistakes you can fix them with some time to spare.

2 Weeks Before the Convention:

-Make a checklist of everything you think you may need or want to bring. I recommend making separate ones for costumes and necessities as it makes packing and organizing everything easier.

Here's what I recommend EVERYONE bring. (I took this off Cosplay.com and added a few things to it myself) You will need it, or someone will need it, and you won't regret bringing it.

Con Survival Kit:

Sewing kit:
-Thread (in every color that appears in the costume)
-Scissors
-Needle
-Spare buttons
-Straightpins
-Safety pins
- Hot Glue Gun
-Sticky-back velcro
Chapstick, pressed powder
Deodorant
Double Stick Tape
Camera and Camera Charger
Water Bottle
Snacks: cereal bars, pretzels, etc
Folder (for art from Artist's Alley)
Pen/Pencil
Sharpie (in colour of prop, for quick fixes)
Tide2Go stick
Got2B Glued (if you have a gravity-defying wig style)
Wig Brush
Wig Detangler
Hairpins
Bobbypins
Medicine:
-Advil
-Midol
-Excedrin
-Sudafed
Wallet:
-Driver's License
-Debit Card
-Cash
DS (lots of people will have them, making multiplayer games exciting)
Cell phone and charger
Contact Solution & Case
First Aid Kit:
-Bandaids
-Neosporin
-Gauze pads
-Medical tape
-Hand wipes/sanitizer
Super glue
Tissues
Lint roller
Preregistration form
Glasses Case + Glasses
Pack of cards (lines are long!)
Toiletries
-Razors
-Shaving Cream
-Toothpaste
-Toothbrush
-Shampoo and Conditioner
-Feminine Care Products
Permanent Marker
Pen and Paper
A Non-Cosplaying Outfit

Finally, this is so important and I can't believe it wasn't mentioned:

Foot Comfort Gel Pads! Get the nicest ones you can find, because these are lifesavers! You do so much walking at cons you have no idea.

-Pack everything from the con survival kit (Except what you're going to be needing up until the day of like your wallet and cell phone.)

On that note, here's some tips on packing:

-Avoid using multiple bags, as things get lost that way. Try using an enormous suitcase! Way more convenient.
-Bring an extra bag for swag or whatever you happen to pick up at the con.
-When I pack everything I generally use gallon sized zip lock bags labeled with permanent marker so accessories, wigs and sometimes shoes don't get lost and are much easier to find.

1 Week before Con:

-Make sure you have all items from your con survival kit. If not, go buy/somehow obtain everything now.
-Confirm Hotel Room.
-Pack Costumes and Costume Accessories

Day Before Con:

-Double Check to make sure you have everything
-Get a good night of sleep!

Day OF con:

-Pre-reg!

...That's pretty much it as far as PLANNING goes....

AT THE CON:

Here's some helpful tips:

Contrary to popular belief anime conventions aren't giant nerdfests, they're more like spring break x100 with random friends in costumes. Well, they're nerdfests too, but hedonistic nerdfests at that.

So, on that note, BE CAREFUL. For the most part everyone at a con is harmless, if a little socially retarded. But I mean, there's thousands of people in one place, most aged 16-28, with little to no adult supervision.

Drink plenty of water! You will dehydrate.

Of course, there's an unofficial con rule: 6+2+1 = 6 hours of sleep a night, two meals a day, one shower per day (seriously, people, hygiene is important...).

Break in your shoes prior to the con! Blisters aren't fun.

Budget your money! Personally I don't spend more than $100 in the dealer's room because the prices are jacked up beyond belief. Example: I bought a death note bag on eBay for $10 and saw it at Anime Boston for $50. So unless you see something you have to have and won't be able to find on eBay (Like my cat ears, best $12 I ever spent) then eBay is your best bet.

On the note of money, make sure you bring extra cash for emergencies, anywhere from $20-$50. You have no idea what could happen, better safe than sorry.

Try to figure out what panels you want to attend. I didn't attend any at AB last year because I'm retarded.

Most importantly: Have fun! lol.

New York Comic Anime ConFest 2010? omgwtf?

This year, NY Comic Con and NY Anime Fest decided it would be a good idea to join forces and have a SuperCon over one weekend.

On one hand, this is great because it means I get two cons in one. Can't complain about that, because I <3 cons more than anything in the whole world and two for the price of one is always win.

But on the other hand I'm sensing a disaster of epic proportions. 30 something year old comic neckbeards + weeaboo jailbait loli together under one roof = something that will never end well.

No anime cons until Anime Boston I think, as I decided to forgo TempleCon in favor of the Fetish Flea in Providence.

Here's my (tentative) list of cons I want to attend in 2010 (Updated!):

-Fetish Flea Fair (February 12th - 14th)

-Anime Boston (April 1st-4th)

-Boston Comic Con (April 10th - 11th) (I will only attend the 10th)

-AnimeNEXT (June 17th - 20th) (VERY tentative...)

-PortCon Maine (June 24th-27th)

-ConnectiCon (July 8th - 11th)

-Otakon (July 29th-August 2nd)

-Dragon*Con (September 2nd-7th) (VERY tentative... Soo Expensive. Someday I will go, but probably not this year ;_;)

-New York Anime Fest (October 7th-10th)

Now... To figure out exactly WHAT i will be cosplaying at all of these cons... Lol.

Bible Black -- Miss Kitami (Sensei)

Again, here's another cosplay I've yet to get around to finishing.

Kitami Sensei from Bible Black.

After watching the anime, I realized that I could essentially pull a closet cosplay for the next event I go to for this character from my collection of latex. I like her as a character regardless because she's an evil sexual predator who dgaf.

I need to watch bits of the series again to refresh my memory as to how the cosplay should look so it's more exact But it's simple enough.

Black latex skirt, stockings and corset. White lab coat. Black heels. Short, choppy blonde wig. Cross earrings and finally, blue contacts. Considering I have the skirt and corset and had intentions on buying stockings anyways it's going to be one of the cheapest cosplays I've ever done. $40 for the heels, $10 for the lab coat, $25 for the wig, I can get a demo pair of contacts like every other cosplayer in the world does, and probably like $5 for the earrings. Under a hundred bucks, that's cool.

I'll add pictures of the character later!

Back to Cosplaying/Repo!'s Amber Sweet Zydrate Anatomy Cosplay

I went on a latex fender bender for a few months spending several hundred dollars on latex.

Although I still would like to purchase a few more items for my latex wardrobe, I'm going to take a break for a little while after buying my outfits for the upcoming Fetish Flea (I do want to have the best looking latex there, lol) to focus on cosplaying again.

I'm going to start buying cosplaying stuff again as con season is coming up and it can get very expensive to buy wigs, material, shoes and accessories as well as paying for the convention itself.

Recently I bought the Amber Sweet Zydrate Anatomy Skirt. I have been searching for it forever! It's by Catherine Coatney and I was incredibly lucky to have found it BRAND NEW on eBay as the style is very rare and discontinued. I paid a pretty penny for it (Just about $80!) but I am so glad to have found it that I'm not that bothered by the price.

This is the full outfit as styled by someone from Polyvore. It's not exactly screen accurate but it is extremely close.
<img alt="Effigia Additum - REPO! The corset used in the movies is by Trashy Lingerie, seen here:
This corset is $250. As much as I want to be as accurate as possible I really don't know if I want to blow $250 on a waist cincher.

I found one that's real leather, and very, very close in appearance and $150 cheaper. I may buy this instead:
Finally, the Polyvore styling seemed to leave out an important detail: The rhinestone bra, seen here on Amber:

Again, I found the same one used in the movie for sale, it's $250. Uhhh, I don't think so.

I mean, really, who has $250 to spend on a freaking bra? Not me, that's for sure. So I'm going to make it myself. All I need is a BeJeweler Hotfix applicator, some crystals, some crystal bra straps (going to buy those from Fredrick's) and a LOT of paitience.

Although I may just go to Fredrick's and buy the crystal bra they have for sale for $50 and wear a black bra under it. It's not that much more expensive and will be A LOT easier to do than sit for hours on end individually gluing crystals to a bra.

More projects to come!

FREYA FREYA FREYA FREYA

I love Chobits! It's probably my favorite anime ever.

When I first read the manga I fell in love with a particular outfit Freya (aka 'Dark Chii') wears. I can't find pictures of the outfit in the actual manga itself, but I did manage to track down pictures from deviantART that people drew. Here is (in my opinion) the best one:

I did find photos of someone doing an INCREDIBLE cosplay of the outfit. I want to steal it!

I'm going to have to make it because I can't find any for sale (and working with steel is hard and I've never made a hoopskirt before) and having it commissioned would cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

I did manage to find a pattern (Which I'm going to have to alter to make it more cage-like) and a great website for materials that isn't terribly expensive and has these clever and helpful 'hoop connectors' for sale. Actually the more I research this the easier I think it will be to make a hoopskirt for myself and I may not even need to buy a pattern. But meh, better safe than sorry I suppose.

As for the corset... Not too excited about that. I will probably buy one because making corsets is time consuming and I'm not very good at making them. And I don't really need a heavy duty srs buisness steel boned corset as they're not terribly comfy and i'm going to be wearing this at a con all day.

!!More projects to come!!

I should really stop being so apathetic about cosplaying and get off my latex kick and actually get some costumes done. -_-

Princess Odette

Yesterday I watched the movie The Swan Princess for the first time in years! How can anyone NOT love that movie?

I decided after watching it that I will be cosplaying Odette in the very near future.

The dress itself is very simple -- it's sort of a fairy-tale take on a medieval dress.

I did find a child's pattern online. I'm considering buying it and modifying the pattern so it will fit me, but the pattern isn't flattering to the shape of a grown girl's body and curves -- as it should be, like it is in the movie. So I will likely end up using a prom or wedding mermaid-style dress pattern and modifying it by adding the sleeves.

Anyways, I've been agonizing over the fabric -- I am flat-out refusing to use satin because there's nothing that would indicate the dress is satin or shiny. I'm considering using Georgette fabric, and using silk satin on the green parts. (because that would look pretty!). The top of the dress would likely have to have boning in it. The fabric I want for the dress would be REALLY expensive. We'll see.

Along with making the dress I'd have to make the locket. Not sure how I'd go about making that but I'm sure I'll figure it out along the way. Also, she wears green flats (I totally caught that in the movie, go me.) so I'd have to get shoes and dye them. Not excited about that.

I'd also need a long wavy blonde wig (gotta love eBay) and probably purple contacts, too. Did anyone else notice that she had lilac-colored eyes in the movie?

Ooookay, onward to get ready for Comic Con! Now if I could only find my latex skirt... >.<

Conventions in 2010

Lucky for me I don't have to pay for a hotel or badge for too many cons because I work as a booth model for Aardvark Tees. Basically I promote the shirts by incorporating them into a cosplay and generate interest by talking with potential customers and in exchange am given a hotel room and badge. Which is a HUGE deal, because hotels are DAMN expensive.

Anyways, I've complied a list of cons I am hoping to attend in 2010. Some are obviously more certain than others. The dates aren't exact, as the cons 'officially' start Friday morning and go until Sunday evening but everyone knows that you pre-reg and get to the con and hotel Thursday evening.

-Anime Boston (April 1st-4th)

-Temple Con (February 4th-7th)

-PortCon Maine (June 24th-27th)

-New York Anime Fest (October 7th-10th)

-Dragon*Con (September 2nd-7th)

-Otakon (July 29th-August 2nd)

-AnimeNEXT (Dates TBA)

-ConnectiCon (Dates TBA)

I'm listing the cons so I can plan out my cosplays in an organized and coherent way... Cause we all know that would NEVER happen if I was left to my own devices. I'm not going to go crazy and get 3+ new cosplays for every convention... That would be expensive and dumb. For pretty much every con I will probably have at least one new cosplay. I tend to play by the rule 'The Bigger the Con, The Bigger the Costume'.

I have some big projects that are currently lined up and will be posting about them in the very near future, so keep an eye out! I love the winter, and I love wearing lots of warm clothes and spending hours walking around Cambridge when it's really cold.

More still, I've always loved snow and ice and frost and the way everything seems so clean and crystalline in the wintertime.

I've decided to use this as inspiration to make a winter fairy costume.

First and foremost, this is the first time I will design something pretty much on my own -- I've found a few pictures I'm using as reference and for inspiration, but the outfit will be entirely unique and made by me, for me. I'm not really scared, as the design itself is pretty simple (mostly flowy chiffon and a bra-esque top) but the embellishments and whatnot will be what make the outfit entirely.

The concept of the outfit I have in mind is a sort of fairy who makes it snow (it sounds better in my head, haha). Here's a few of the pictures I'm using for inspiration.

I'm going to have to make the wings myself. I'm a lot more confident about metalworking because I've done it before. I've made a dress from chicken fence. It was insane, but got lost somewhere in my gay-rage before I could photograph it. :( Also, there's so many tutorials online that essentially make it fool-proof to screwing up.

I'm not starting this particular project until late November because that's when all the winter decorations start coming out in full force. Glass snowflakes, icicles... Perfect embellishments. I'm also going to be using Swavarski crystals liberally, and maybe some bits of something mirrored.

Finally... I will probably not be wearing this at a con. Why? It's not really a character for anything, and although the costume will be beautiful I don't like doing OC's at a con unless its for the rave. So... I'm hoping to use it for a shoot. Or just an outfit to wear around town. ^_^

Danny Phantom Cosplay?

I know I already posted today but I want to write while I'm still in the mood to write and remember this blog!

Anyway, older people (Probably older than like 20) will probably not be familiar with this series but I don't care because it's a great show and I still watch it from time to time because it's amazing.
That's right. I'm talking about DANNY PHANTOM!

Recently I purchased a latex catsuit. I've always wanted one, and I figured, what the hell, it's my birthday, and I get a decent discount with some latex company in China because they used a picture of me in their latex for advertising or something. (I know everyone hates Chinese latex. I've never had a problem with these people, so piss off.) I bought it also keeping in mind catsuits are great for cosplaying because so many women in American comics and such wear them.

I never thought about something like this, though. My first thought was doing a Black Cat cosplay from the Spiderman series. But then one day I was sick at home with Swine Flu (This was actually like a week ago) and was watching cartoons because I'm really cool, and was looking at Danny Phantom and had a revelation that I COULD DO A GIRL VERSION OF THAT WITH MY CATSUIT.

Of course I'm going to have to get boots for it, right? And then I remember I saw these amazing sparkly silver PLATFORM boots that I really wanted. At the time I couldn't find a good reason to buy them, because I already have two pairs of platform boots along with a million pair of crazy high heels, and I didn't 'need' them for a costume or outfit at the time. But now that I have a reason... Muahaha get in my closet.

The gloves, belt and neck thing are a bit of an issue for me because I don't like how silver latex looks at all. It's not sparkly and is more of an ugly grey. I will likely use PVC because it can be painted and glittered as opposed to latex which is finicky (and expensive) as hell.

Now, I'm going to have to get a white wig. It's probably going to be chin length and spiky, as a long white wig would probably make people think I was The Black Cat anyways. I sort of like this wig but I think the best thing for me to do is to just get a long wig and have it cut to the length and style I want... Always the best option.

Finally, the last bit is the 'Glowing Green Eyes'. I'm not worried about this as I can get a pair of UV Green contact lenses and call it a day.

And I'm definitely going to be making a Fenton Thermos, too. I don't know when I'm going to be wearing this (Perhaps AAC?) but whenever I do it'll be a great costume!

Pokemon Gijinka Cosplay

y

When I go to cons and surf cosplay sites, I notice most people have a collective hatred towards 'Gijinka Cosplay'. Gijinka Cosplaying basically is doing a human version of an animal-sort of anime character. Here's an example of a Pokemon Gijinka Cosplay:Personally I love this type of cosplaying and don't understand why everyone rages so much when it's done. But cosplayers can be a fickle bunch.

I'm attending Another Anime Con in favor of Anime USA -- AUSA would have been great because I would have promo modeled for Aardvark Tees again, but it's too far away and I'd have to miss a lot of school to go. AAC is only in Nashua and I like going to cons as a regular attendee as much as possible because there's less stress and people pay less attention to you.

In semi-irrelevant news, I was accepted as a model for Cosplay Deviants. I'm shooting my set soon, and the photographer is really great so I'm very excited because I know it will turn out beautifully all while being faithful to the series I'm doing. This also means more cons! Yay more cons!

Anyway, I was discussing AAC because I'm likely going to be doing at least one Gijinka cosplay. I have so many costumes that I want to do and I'm terribly excited because they're all going to be so incredible.

As I've said before I'm a horrific designer, but not a bad seamstress. Luckily I have nice friends on deviantART who can design but don't bother actually making the costumes. And I'm here to make them come to life.

I've found a few costumes I really would like to do on my own, but I know that this one is for certain going to be made. For one, it's very simple, more like a DIY-punk outfit I used to make all the time, and for two, it's faithful to the character which is probably the most important part of any cosplay.

This particular cosplay is modeled after the pokemon Koffing, also pictured. The simplicity of this costume is so ridiculous. I'm not sure if I'm going to handmake the skirt or just buy white clothes and dye them to the suitable color and then do a sort of destroyed punk look to them, but either way it's not going to take very long to do and will look great regardless. I'm topping this off with some black fishnets, a black studded collar and bracelet as well as my black platform boots. Oh, and a purple wig of course, which will be chin length and without bangs like the girl in the picture. This entire costume will cost less than $50. Good deal.

Anyways, I'm working on a bunch of other costumes but I always forget to update this blog. I doubt anyone actually reads this because I've never told anyone about it, so I really don't think anyone minds that I'm not updating. Even still, imaginary readers, look forward to my blogs about other upcoming costumes and cons! Someday I'll get my act together and organize myself properly so I sound like I know what I'm doing >.<

Firewall Cosplay

At my last con (Game Unicon aka Gay Unicorn) I was introduced to an interesting guy who cosplays the internet. If you go to cons you've probably seen him walking around. That's him, Con Jesus and me in the photo. I stole his hat and pipe!

He's a pretty cool guy, and for the next con I attend I'm working on a cosplay that accompanies it. I tried to think of a way to do /b/ (inb4 rules 1 and 2) but I think the Fawkes mask and a Hilary Clinton-esque power suit wouldn't really show off how I looked. I really don't know what else to do, so I'm doing a 'Firewall' Cosplay. I wish I could draw because it's hard to describe, exactly.

I'm probably going to end up buying a good amount of stuff for this cosplay, because I know how I want it to look and I'm not capable of making that kind of costume yet.

Ahh how do I describe it? It's a burlesque-themed cosplay, (I'm trying REALLY hard to shy away from lolita!) so there's going to be a corset, mini top hat, garters and fishnet involved. It's likely going to be red and black. Obviously I can't really make any of this, but the costume shouldn't be terribly expensive -- Hopefully under a hundred dollars.

Because I suck at designing I'm basically going to use other stuff that's already been designed as a reference whilst making tweaks on it as I see fit.

For starters, here's a skirt that I really like the style of. I'm not sure if I like the lace, but other than that I adore it. Obviously I'd have to use a different color.

I'd pair the skirt with a corset. I ADORE this one, but not its $200 price tag. Also, it's underbust, and I definetly have a preference for overbust corsets. I wish corsets weren't so expensive!

I'll probably just end up buying something like the other corset pictured. It's still really quite pretty, and it's under $50. (Thanks, China!) I'm not going to be wearing a wig, because that would be silly for the style of costume this is.

I thought the top hat would be a nice touch because the Internet wears a top hat, too. Isn't the one pictured perfect?

I'm definetly going to be wearing fishnets and a garter belt which will likely be attached to the skirt, but it seems silly to post all that stuff, seeing as how image-heavy this post already is.

I'll be updating this post as I get stuff for the costume and/or get inspired with new ideas :)

First Post ! ^_^

Hi everyone! I’m Chrissi. I’ve always loved to dress up in crazy clothes and elaborate costumes. I started OFFICIALLY cosplaying at Anime Boston 2008 and immediately fell in love with the entire scene. Since then, I’ve done a fair bit of cosplaying, but all of my costumes so far have been bought. It’s becoming horribly expensive, and on top of that I keep wanting to make costumes that simply can’t be bought on eBay for under $200.

So, I’m going to venture in the murky waters of DIY, self-taught costuming. I have so many ideas, I’m going nuts and I need a place to keep everything organized.

I’ll be using this blog to write about cons I’m attending, cosplay shoots, ideas for costumes, and obviously, the costumes themselves! XD

I doubt anyone’s going to care much about this, but I thought it’d be fun.

Love,

Chrissi!
